i've been using this medium nato style rucksack for school for the past three years or so. i opted for the medium rather than the large rucksack since i travel by public transportation. medium is the perfect size and doesn't feel bulky for such purposes. i'm 5' 9" and your experience might vary depending on your height.
this rucksack will carry your items like most backpacks would, but what i really love about it is the storm flap design rather than the zipped up main compartment in most backpacks. first you tighten a drawstring to close up the rucksack's main compartment with a small opening left, then you buckle up the thick storm flap to cover the small opening afterward. the rain will have to break through the very thick storm flap before it will ruin your stuff. there have been days when i wasn't carrying an umbrella and this storm flap has saved my books. love it! for extra protection, these days i also store a folded up garbage bag in the pocket underneath the storm flap to add extra shielding, as well as to have a waterproof bag around in case of emergencies.
the storm flap can also be used to hold a folded up hooded sweatshirt (or other light jacket). just tuck the folded up jacket underneath the flap, and then buckle up. this capability is quite handy when it's too hot outdoors, but too cold indoors. with this rucksack, you can easily have an extra layer of clothing available without having to stuff it into a crowded backpack or holding it in your arms.
to give you an idea of size, here's a description of a typical load the main compartment can comfortably hold: a netbook or kindle dx in a padded laptop case, a folder with various papers, a clipboard with various papers, a book, a leather journal, a small water bottle, and a tupperware box containing my lunch. i could also throw in another book or two if need be. now, if you need more space than this, i would suggest purchasing the large size rucksack instead. however, for most people the medium size should be quite sufficient.
there's a slight quirk with this rucksack. the rucksack uses straps with metal ends that allow you to thread the buckles. it might seem strange at first, but you'll easily get the hang of the buckle system. that's not the quirky part. what's weird is that there are 10 straps while there are only 8 buckles total. there are 2 short straps attached to the bottom of the rucksack with no corresponding buckles. as far as i know, they are there merely as decoration. you can see these two short bottom straps in the photo on the amazon page. i found them annoying, so i removed them with scissors. the rucksack was not damaged by their removal and looks cleaner after their removal.
if you already like this rucksack's military aesthetics, then you will be pleased by its functionality as well. buy it!

The Nato Rucksacks are made of a 22oz heavy duty canvas, with one large main compartment with a draw corded closure and storm flap with a adjustable double buckle closure. The inside of the Nato Rucksack also has a pocket with a velcro closure with an exterior front of front pouch pocket with strap closures and there are two outside side pockets with strap closures. The Nato backpack has fully adjustable shoulder straps straps and a carry handle on top. Size:20" x 14" X 9"

This is a very good size for everyday use, it's not a massive pack and your not going to haul a tent and three days worth of supplies in this, but it will hold a change of cloth's and some basics very easily, works well as a book bag as well and is perfect for an Ooh Spit Sack for the back of your car (I nice emergency pack.)
a great deal for the pack, Made in India and of decent construction, it does get complicated getting all the straps attached correctly while empty, i stuffed a pillow into it to fill it out and it came together nicely.

i bought this bag because i go to school in an large urban area and i always have to truck around a lot of junk plus i needed something tough. it definitely holds up well and is big. would recommend.

It seems to be holding up pretty well. The straps look like they could break fairly easy, but so far, they have not.
