I wear a backpack everyday and approve of this one from Quicksilver. It has lots of pockets one for shades and one for cell phone.
It is not too big and is lightweight.

I got this bag because my old bag didn't have anywhere to store a laptop and I didn't feel like putting it in and out of a sleeve every time I used it. I have a 17" laptop and there is still room in the back for a 18". The bag holds the laptop in securely and with good padding all around. Straps are comfortable, there is plenty of room for a laptop and as many textbooks one would ever want to carry along with a place for everything. Great buy.
